Driving Fort Worth's Interstate Loop: How I-35W, I-30, I-20, and I-820 Fit Together
Four interstates frame Fort Worth driving. Knowing which one serves which trip — and where the I-35 split sends you — makes the whole system easier to use.

Fort Worth driving is organized around four interstates. Interstate 35W runs north–south through the middle of the city on its way between the I-35 split south of Fort Worth and Denton to the north. Interstate 30 crosses east–west through downtown toward Arlington and Dallas. Interstate 20 forms the southern east–west route, and Interstate 820 loops around much of the city, tying the other highways together.
The geography that confuses newcomers most is the split itself. South of Fort Worth, Interstate 35 divides into I-35W through Fort Worth and I-35E through Dallas, rejoining north of the Metroplex near Denton. Choosing the W branch is the whole decision for Fort Worth-bound drivers, and the overhead signs at the split mark the choice clearly for those watching for them.
Downtown, I-35W and I-30 meet in a stacked interchange near the convention center and Water Gardens, and I-35W also serves the Stockyards area via exits toward North Main Street and the northeast quadrant. I-820, meanwhile, is the practical crosstown tool: it connects I-35W on the north and south sides of the city with I-30 on the west and I-20 on the south, letting drivers bypass the downtown core entirely.
Everyday guidance on these corridors is evergreen. Build extra time into trips during morning and evening peaks, especially on I-35W near downtown and on I-30 between Fort Worth and Arlington on event days. Check current conditions before leaving through the Texas Department of Transportation's DriveTexas conditions map, which shows incidents, construction, and closures statewide.
For longer trips, the same map covers the drive before it starts: I-35W south toward Austin, I-30 east toward Dallas, and I-20 toward West Texas all begin as ordinary Fort Worth commutes. Knowing the loop on a calm day is what makes a hard day on the roads manageable.
